DON’T LOSE THE GLORY!
1 TIMOTHY 1:11-12; ISAIAH 1:11-20
INTRODUCTION
Familiarity can and often does breed complacency in our lives. (For Example– Insurance companies will tell you that most automobile wrecks happen within a 2 mile radius from home.)
There is a danger in our lives of familiarity with what we know of the truths of God’s word, what we believe and what we practice.
They just become “old hat”. We find a comfort zone that can cause us to forget the glory of what we possess
This is especially true of those of us who are in places of leadership in the Church where we deal with the things of God on a continual basis.
Many can begin to attend church, not out of love but out of only habit or duty with no anticipation to see the glory of God at work.
Service for God becomes mundane, it loses its freshness, and we go thru the motions without a view of God’s purpose and plan--we lose the big picture.
We begin to teach Sunday School to show how much we know or because no one else will do it rather than to change lives.
We can attend Sunday School to accumulate facts about the Bible but without practical application being made to our personal lives.
Churches are full of people who may know the truth in their heads , but who are not living the truth out in their lives.
Many sing the songs from the head and from the mouth but rarely, if ever, from the heart.
Many pray their public prayers not really speaking to God, but rather speaking to the ears of those who are hearing them pray.
Preaching services are endured and some may even say “Amen,” but it fails to stir them to change because they are blinded by familiarity.
What I am talking about is when the ministry God gives us becomes a job or a chore rather than a passion for a Person.
Going through the motions of service without the power of God in our lives.
Operating on auto-pilot. Cruise control.
“. . .the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.”
I. DON’T LOSE THE GLORY OF HIS WORKS.
(Psalm 111:1-6)
A. His Works Are Great. (Vs 2)
1. His Works.
The word means “actions.”
a. What He Has Done In The Past.
“To God be the Glory Great Things He Hath Done.”
1) The Creation
2) The Cross
3) The Canon of Scripture
b. What He Does In The Present.
1) He Still Saves.
2) He Still Seals and Secures.
3) He Still Sanctifies.
4) He Still Satisfies.
c. What He Yet Will Do In The Future.
1)He Is Coming For His Saints--Rapture.
2)He Is Coming With His Saints--Second Coming.
3)He Is Coming With His Scepter--Millennial Reign
2. Are Great.
The word means “much above the ordinary or average in some quality or degree. Superior.”
Mark 7:37-- “He hath done all things well.”
His Work Are Great!
B. His Work Is Honorable! (Vs 3)
It means “full of grandeur (greatness of position; eminence.)”
(Example--Pike’s Peak)
Isaiah 55:8–“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
C. His Work Is Glorious. (Vs 3)
It means “magnificent, full of splendor.”
(Example--The Universe, Rainbow)
Psalm 19:1-3–“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.”
D. His Works Are To Be Remembered. (Vs 4)
It means “a memento or that which brings recollection.
A memorial.”
God’s works are a to be a reminder of the Glory of God Himself.
E. His Works Are To Be Remembered With A Purpose. (Vs 6)
“Heritage” = “inheritance.”
“He redeemed His people out of Egypt with a mighty outstretched arm to show them His ability to do what He promised Abraham--that is, give them the Promised Land for their inheritance.”
Just as He was able to give the children of Israel what He promised them, so He is able to give us that which He promises us.
1 Peter 1:4–“To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,”
“If he hung the moon, I know He will help you
If he holds the sparrow in flight, He’ll hold you too.
Consider the lilies of the field, How much more he loves you,
In the beginning of time, you were on His mind, when He hung the moon.”
Every part of His creation is a testimony to His glory!
Psalm 145:1-21
I. DON’T LOSE THE GLORY OF HIS WORKS.
II. DON’T LOSE THE GLORY OF HIS NAME.
(PSALM 72:18-19)
“The LORD God” = “Jehovah Elohim”– it means “the self-existent or eternal God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.”
A. His Name Is Glorious Because He Is Above All His Creation.
Isaiah 14:12-16–“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;”
B. His Name Is Glorious Because He Can And Will Deliver What He Promises.
Philippians 1:6–“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”
Romans 8:29-39
Ephesians 3:20-21–“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.”
C. His Name Is Glorious Because He Is “The Great I Am.”
1. He is not “The Great I Was.”
2. He is not “The Great For A While.”
3. He is not “The Great I Will Be.”
4. He is not “The Great I Might Be.”
5. He is “The Great I Am.” (John 8:23-24; 58)
a. I am the Bread of Life. John 6:35, 48-51
b. I am the Light of the World. John 8:12
c. I am the Door. John 10:7-10
d. I am the Good Shepherd. John 10:11
e. I am the Resurrection and the Life.
John 11:25
I. DON’T LOSE THE GLORY OF HIS WORKS.
II. DON’T LOSE THE GLORY OF HIS NAME.
III. DON’T LOSE THE GLORY OF HIS GOSPEL.
A. It Is Glorious Because Of How It Was Wrought.
Revelation 13:8–“. . . the lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world.”
2 Timothy 1:9–“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,”
2 Peter 1:20–says that Christ “was foreordained before the foundation of the world”
B. It Is Glorious Because Of How It Was Sought.
(1 Peter 1: 10-12)
1. By The Prophets.
2. By The Angels.
C. It Is Glorious Because Of How It Was Bought.
(1 Peter 1:18-19)
Don’t lose the glory of the Cross.
D. It Is Glorious Because Of What It Has Wrought.
(2 Corinthians 5:17, 21)
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
E. It Is Glorious Because Of How It Is Taught.
(2 Corinthians 4:1-7)
1 Thessalonians 2:4–“But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.”
Paul said it was “committed to my trust” (1 Timothy 1:11)
We could call it “treasure in a trash can.”
Conclusion
Don’t allow that which is “holy” to become “common” to us.
Keep the glory before you of:
God’s Works, God’s Name, and God’s Gospel.
Has the ministry become commonplace? Is it just another. . .whatever? Don’t lose the glory!
If you have lost the glory, don’t you think it is time to get the glory back?
Renew your vision of the glory today!
