WHAT DID JESUS DO?
PART 1--HE GREW UP
LUKE 2:40, 46-49, 50-52
INTRODUCTION
“In His Steps” is a book written by Charles M. Sheldon about a church in the fictional town of Raymond that had a pastor and a group of people who determined to live their lives by first asking the question– ”What would Jesus do?”--and then conducting the affairs of their lives accordingly for one year.
“What would Jesus do?” is a good question to ask ourselves as we live the Christian life.
WWJD? I doubt Jesus would have marketed the idea as has been done in our society.
Well, What did Jesus do? Number 1--Jesus Grew Up.
Isaiah 53:2-- “For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground:”
Growing up is natural for that which is alive. Both plant life and animal life.
There is cause for concern for that which does not grow. Something is wrong if growth is not present.
But the Bible records that Jesus grew. Read Luke 2:40ff. How about you?
Psalm 92:12-14–“The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;”
flourish = “break forth as a bud; bloom; to spread.”
I. JESUS GREW IN SPIRITUAL STRENGTH. (VS 40)
This doesn’t happen by accident!
A. Spiritual Strength Comes From Feeding The Inner Man.
(1 Peter 2:1-3)
We can feed the natural man or we can feed the spiritual man.
B. Spiritual Strength Comes From The Spirit Of God.
Ephesians 3:16-- “That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;”
C. Spiritual Strength Is The Very Power Of God In Our Lives.
(i.e. God working in us)
Colossians 1:11–“Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness”
D. Spiritual Strength Comes From The Lord Standing With Us. 2 Timothy 4:17-18--“Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
Isaiah 40:28-31
JESUS GREW IN SPIRITUAL STRENGTH.
II. JESUS GREW IN WISDOM. (VS 40, 52)
“Wisdom” = “good judgment based on knowledge or learning.”
A. He Grew In Worldly Wisdom.
There is a definite difference between living in the world and being wise to it and being of the world with its wisdom living in us.
1. He Was Not Of This World.
John 8:23–“And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.”
2. His Kingdom Was Not Of This World.
Jesus said to Pilate in John 18:36– “My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.”
3. God Has Made Foolish The Wisdom Of This World.
1 Corinthians 1:20– “Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?”
1 Corinthians 3:19-- “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.”
4 The Wisdom Of This World Will Not Bring You To God.
1 Corinthians 1:21–“For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”
5. The Wisdom Of This World Is Not To Be How Or What We Speak. (1 Corinthians 2:1-16)
6. The Wisdom Of This World Will Come To Nothing.
1 Corinthians 2:6–“Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect:yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:”
1 Corinthians 3:19–“ The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.”
1 Corinthians 1:19– “For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”
B. He Grew In Spiritual Wisdom. (Isaiah 7:14-16)
1 Corinthians 1:24–“Christ, the power of God and wisdom of God.”
1. Spiritual Wisdom Affects What We Know And How We Think. (Ephesians 1:17-19)
2. Spiritual Wisdom Affects How We Walk. (Colossians 1:9-10; 4:5)
3. Spiritual Wisdom Affects Our Fruitfulness. (Colossians 1:10)
4. Spiritual Wisdom Affects How We Grow. (Colossians 1:10) (Miracle Grow!)
5. Spiritual Wisdom Affects Our Endurance Or Our Strength To Stand. (Colossians 1:11)
6. Spiritual Wisdom Affects Our Worship.
(Colossians 1:12)
7. Spiritual Wisdom Brings Us To Spiritual Maturity. (Colossians 1:28)
8. Spiritual Wisdom Is A Treasure.
(Colossians 2:3; Proverbs 2:1-6)
9. Spiritual Wisdom Cannot Be Successfully Resisted.
Acts 6:10 says about Stephen “And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.”
10. Spiritual Wisdom Comes From God.
James 1:5–“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
11. Spiritual Wisdom Is Totally Different Than Worldly Wisdom. (James 3:13-17)
JESUS GREW IN SPIRITUAL STRENGTH.
JESUS GREW IN WISDOM.
III. JESUS GREW IN THE GRACE OF GOD. (VS 40, 46-47, 52)
i.e. The grace of God was evident in his life.
“Grace”– “graciousness , of manner or act; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude.”
2 Peter 3:18–“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.“
Conclusion
What did Jesus do? He grew up physically, mentally and spiritually.
What should we do? He is our example! We should grow up too!
Are you growing in spiritual strength?
Are you growing in wisdom?
Are you growing in the grace of God?
Ephesians 4:11-15
1 Corinthians 13:11--“When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought asa child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”
