THE DOCTRINE OF CHRIST
PART 3b, 3c, 3d–HIS RESURRECTION
2 JOHN 7-11; 1 CORINTHIANS 15:1-8
Introduction
I. THE FACT OF CHRIST’S RESURRECTION. (1 Corinthians 15:4)
A. Beyond a question, the foundational truth preached in the early years of the Church’s history was that of the Resurrection of Christ.
B. Another thing to consider is the change in the day of worship from Saturday to Sunday.
C. The drastic change in the disciples.
II. THE IMPORTANCE OF CHRIST’S RESURRECTION.
A. Its Importance In The Scriptures.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is mentioned directly 104 or more times in the New Testament.
B. Its Importance In The Apostles Testimony.
C. The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ Is One Of Three Fundamental Truths Of The Gospel.
D. Disprove The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ, And Christian Faith Is Vain.
E. The Doctrine Of The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ Has The Power To Save Anyone Who Believes It With The Heart.
F. To Know The Power Of Christ’s Resurrection Is One Of The Highest Ambitions Of The Intelligent Believer.
III. THE MANNER OF CHRIST’S RESURRECTION.
A. His Resurrection Was A Miraculous Resurrection!
(i.e. God Raised Up Jesus Christ From The Dead By The Working Of The Strength Of His Might. Ephesians 1:19-20)
It was God who put forth the might. It was God who loosed the pains of death.
He laid down His life to the fullest extent, He was in the fullest sense dead, and it took the strength of God’s might to raise Him from the dead.
B. His Resurrection Was A Bodily Resurrection!
(After His Resurrection, He ate and drank, He had hands, feet, flesh and bones, and all the appearance of a man.)
(Luke 24:39; John 20:27; Acts 10:40-41)
C. His Resurrection Was A Glorified Resurrection!
1. His Body Was Not Subject To Some Of The Limitations Under Which Ordinary Earthly Bodies Exist And Act. (John 20:19; Luke 24:31)
2. His Body Had Been Transformed Into An Incorruptible, Glorious, Mighty, Spiritual, Heavenly Body That Was Not Flesh And Blood.
(Philippians 3:21; 1 Corinthians 15:42-50)
IV. THE RESULTS OF THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST.
1. By The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ, A Solid Foundation Was Laid For Our Faith In God. (1 Peter 1:21)
(i.e. It Is Through Jesus Christ That Men Become Believers In God Who Raised Him From The Dead.)
Men have been looking constantly for proofs of the existence and character of God.
There is the argument from the marks of creative intelligence and design of the material universe.
There is the argument from the evidence of an intelligent guiding hand in human history.
But The Resurrection of Jesus Christ points with unerring certainty to the existence, power, and holiness of the God who raised Him.
Our belief in God is fixed on a faith that rests on a firm fact.
2. By The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ, Believers Are Born Again “Unto A Lively Hope. . .To An Inheritance Undefiled, And That Fadeth Not Away, Reserved In Heaven” For Us.
(1 Peter 1:3-4)
The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the Truth that is made living in our hearts by the Holy Spirit and results in the new birth.
Through our believing in a risen and a living Christ, Christ begins to live in us.
The Resurrection of Christ forms a firm foundation of fact on which to build our hope for the future.
3. By The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ, He Declared To Be The Son Of God With Power. (Romans 1:4)
The claim that Jesus made was that, while even the greatest and best of the prophets were only servants, He was a Son.
He was the beloved and only One of the Father; that while other faithful messengers were only servants in the kingdom of God, the kingdom actually belonged to Him as His own inheritance.
He was one with the Father, and so men should honor Him with the same honor as the Father.
By raising Christ from the dead, God set His seal to this claim.
Even though others were raised from the dead by God’s power, they made no such claim prior to their deaths as did Jesus.
4. By The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ, God Has Given Assurance To All Men That He Will Judge The World In Righteousness By Jesus Christ. (Acts 17:31)
Jesus Christ claimed that God would judge the world by Him.
(John 5:22, 27-29)
By raising Christ from the dead, God has set His seal to that claim.
If you ask me how I know there is a Judgment Day coming when Christ will judge the world in righteousness, I’ll tell you to remember the empty tomb.
The sure fact of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ points unerringly forward to the sure coming of judgment in the future.
5. By The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ, Believers In Him Are Justified (i.e. Declared Righteous).
Romans 4:25–“Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.”
Christ gave up His life as an atoning sacrifice for believers.
He was delivered up for our transgressions.
The Resurrection is God’s declaration of His acceptance of Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf. Therefore it is a declaration of justification to those who believe on His death, burial, and resurrection for them.
Christ died as our Representative. (Ephesians 2:5-6)
Christ also arose as our Representative.
He ascended as our Representative.
He is seated as our Representative.
As One risen, ascended, and seated, He is declared to be God’s chosen and accepted One, and we are declared chosen, accepted, and righteous in Him.
6. By The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ, Believers Bring Forth Fruit Unto God. (Romans 7:4)
The only living or doing or accomplishing or accomplishing in the Christians life that is acceptable to God is through union with the risen Christ.
Through union with the crucified Christ, we get our pardon, our cleansing from guilt, our justification, and our perfect standing before God.
Through union with the risen Christ, we get power for life and power for fruit bearing.
One reason there is so little life and fruit in many professing Christian lives is that there is so little knowledge of the risen and living Christ.
Colossians 2:12–“Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.”
Romans 6:4–“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
This is the truth that baptism symbolizes according to Romans 6:3-4.
We will not know the full power of Christ’s resurrection until we “attain unto the resurrection of the dead.” (Philippians 3:11)
Romans 8:11–“But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”
7. Through The Resurrected Life Of Jesus Christ, Believers Will Be Saved From The Penalty, Power And Ultimately The Very Presence Of Sin. (Romans 5:9-10)
John 14:19–“Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.”
Colossians 3:4–“When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.”
8. Through The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ, We Have An Ever-Living High Priest At The Right Hand Of God To Continually Make Intercession For Us, And Who Is Therefore Able To Save “To The Uttermost” (Or, “Unto All-Completeness).
Hebrews 7:25–“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”
Salvation was begun by the atoning death of Jesus Christ.
It continued by the resurrection and intercession of Christ.
We not only have a Saviour who died and made atonement for our sin, but He also rose and carried the blood into the Holy of Holies–God’s own presence–and presented it there. And now He ever lives and pleads our case in every new failure.
We can have abiding security and assurance in our hearts because of the completeness of His work for us and in us.
Romans 8:33-34–“Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. 34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.”
9. In The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ, We Have An Illustration And Proof Of The Exceeding Greatness Of God’s Power Toward Us. (Ephesians 1:18-20)
If we wish to understand and know what God can do in and for us, we simply have to look at and meditate on upon the resurrection of Jesus Christ, looking to God to give us a “spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him.”
10. The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ Is The Guarantee Of Our Own Resurrection.
2 Corinthians 4:14–Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you.”
We are so united to Christ by faith that if He arose, then we must.
Romans 8:11–“But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”
The resurrection of Jesus Christ has robbed death of its terrors for the believer.
1 Corinthians 15:55-57–“O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
11. The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ Is The Fulfillment Of The Promise Made To The Fathers. (Acts 13:32-33)
The risen Christ is the Seed in which all nations will be blessed in His turning them away from their iniquities.
Acts 26:6-8
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the guarantee of the fulfillment of all the promises of God.
It declares Him to be the Son of God with power, and it shows His words to be the sure words of God.
It reveals God’s ability to keep His Word.
He who keeps His word in raising the dead can surely fulfill all His promises.
2 Corinthians 1:20–“For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.”
Conclusion
We’ve seen: THE FACT OF CHRIST’S RESURRECTION.
You can choose to believe the facts or refuse the facts, but you cannot change the facts.
THE IMPORTANCE OF CHRIST’S RESURRECTION.
It was important for our salvation! Without it we would not have the promise of life after the grave!
You will not get saved apart from believing in your heart that Christ died for your sins, He was buried, and He arose on the third day!
THE MANNER OF CHRIST’S RESURRECTION.
(Miraculous, bodily, glorified)
THE RESULTS OF CHRIST’S RESURRECTION.
(These eleven results that we covered stand at the center of all that we have and all that we are in Christ.)
Don’t let the world and the devil and his cohorts play tricks on you!
No one has disproved the Resurrection. You want to know something else?
They never will! Why, because it really did happen!
