THE DOCTRINE OF CHRIST

PART 1b-HIS PERSON

II JOHN; COLOSSIANS 1:15-19

Introduction

The Apostle John speaks here of the importance of the doctrine of Christ.

Verse 9 is our text verse for this series of messages on the doctrine of Christ.

Most heresy that exists in both the cults and other false religions has to do with the doctrine of Jesus Christ. (i.e. Doctrine = Teaching.)

Just Who is Jesus Christ? There are a lot opinions that people have. Some are right, but many of them are wrong!

Jesus wants us to know and understand who He is. He made it very clear and very plain in His Word. The question is, do you agree with who He said He was? Do you agree with what the Word of God teaches He was?

This morning I want us to continue our look at the Doctrine of the Person of Christ. Turn to Colossians 1:15-19.

We said that this section of Scripture deals specifically with the person of Christ and is the answer to all heresy concerning the person of Jesus Christ.

I want to briefly review what we looked at last week:

I.          HIS PERSON. (VS 15a)

He Is The Image Of The Invisible God! Jesus Is God In The Flesh!

II.         HIS POSITION. (VS 15, 18)

             A.         He Is The Firstborn Of Every Creature.

                          1.          He Is The Firstborn Of God In The Flesh.

Of every creature that was ever made, He is the first that was born of God.

2.He is the only one Who was ever begotten of God in the flesh!

Firstborn indicates His priority before all creation.

                          3.          He Is The Firstborn From The Dead. (Vs 18)

He was not the first to arise from the dead. But,

He was the first to arise from the dead to die no more!

             B.         He Is The Head Of The Church. (Vs 18)

                          1.          The Head Is The Prominent Position In The Body.

                          2.          The Head Is The Power Position In The Body.

                          3.          The Head Is The Perception Position In The Body.

All five senses find their source in the Head!

 III.        HIS POWER. (VS 16)

             The Very Power of God!

             A.         All Things Were Created By Him.

             B.         All Things Were Created Beneath Him.

             C.         All Things Were Created Because Of (Or For) Him.

Now, let’s continue to look at The Doctrine Of Christ’s Person!:

IV.       HIS PRE-EXISTENCE.

             (VS 17; Revelation 1:8, 11, 17-18)

Genesis 1:1–“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

John 1:1–“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Isaiah 44:6–“Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.”

Micah 5:2–“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”

John 8:58–“Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.”

John 17:5–“And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.”

Hebrews 13:8–“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”

V.         HIS PREEMINENCE. (Vs 18)

Preeminence means to be first (in rank or influence).

             A.         He Is Preeminent In Prophecy.

                          1.          Psalm 45:1-7

                          2.          Psalm 89:20-28

             B.         He Is Preeminent In Position. Matthew 23:8-10

John 3:31-- “He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.”

             C.         He Is Preeminent In Power. 1 Corinthians 15:24-28.

Matthew 28:18-- “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.”

             D.         He Is Preeminent In Preference.

John 1:27-- “He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me.”

Colossians 1:17-- “He is before all things.”

             E.         He Is Preeminent In Praiseworthiness.

                          Revelation 5:8-14

Jesus rightfully owns first place in all things.

Does He have first place in your life?

  VI.      HIS PLENITUDE. (Vs 19)

             Plenitude means fullness; completeness.

             A.         There Is The Fullness Of His Prudence. (Colossians 2:3)

                          His wisdom and knowledge.

             B.         There Is The Fullness Of His Personage. (Colossians 2:9)

             C.         There Is The Fullness Of His Presence. (Colossians 2:10)

John 1:16–“And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.”

             D.         There Is The Fullness Of His Presents.

Ephesians 1:3–“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:”

VII.      HIS PEACE. (Vs 20-22)

             A.         He Is The Prince Of Peace

Isaiah 9:6 said Jesus would be called the “Prince of Peace.”

Prince means “the head or chief.”

             B.         He Is The Procurer Of Peace.

Romans 5:1–“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”

To “propitiate” means to win or regain the good will of; to appease or conciliate.

The word translated “reconcile”--means “to reconcile fully.”

This word “reconcile”--the first two meanings in Webster’s Dictionary are:

                          1.          To make friendly again.

                          2.          To settle a quarrel.

Note that man is reconciled to God! God is not reconciled to man!

The one with the problem was man, not God!

Man turned away from God to become the enemy of God.

Hebrews 2:17-18–“Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.”

Ephesians 2:13-17; 2 Corinthians 5:18ff

The whole world is made savable through Christ’s death.

He is the Prince Of Peace.

He is the Procurer Of Peace.

             C.         He Is The Producer Of Peace.

Luke 2:14–“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”

Conclusion

Oh what a mighty and glorious Saviour that we have! He is superior in every way to all of His creation, even us!

Because of Who He is (i.e. His person), we should be obedient to Him in every way!

Who do you say that Jesus is? What is your view of Christ? How does it line up with the doctrine of Christ taught by Jesus and the apostles?

Is He your Lord? Does He have the preeminence in your life? Have you received of His fullness? Have you received His peace?

If not, why don’t you receive Him today. Give Him the place in your life that He deserves so that you can have His fullness and peace in your life!

Dear Christian friend, are you serving this glorious Saviour as you should?

Again I remind you that you have all of Him. But, does He have all of you?
