HOW TO CONTINUE TO WALK IN GOD’S WAYS
1 JOHN 2:1-2
INTRODUCTION
The special Revival meetings are over now, although I hope that Revival is just beginning. Our hearts were blessed with the preaching of God’s Word. There were many who were moved by the preaching of God’s Word and many who got some things right with the Lord. However, if we are not careful, there can be a tendency to let up and to forget the commitments we made to God and revert back to our old way of living. How can we avoid doing that? How can we continue to walk in God’s ways?
I. STAND IN AWE OF GOD. (i.e. FEAR GOD)
Psalm 4:3-4–“But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him. Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still.”
“Stand In Awe”--to quiver (with any violent emotion, especially anger or fear):
Psalm 10:4–“The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.”
Psalm 36:1–“The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.”
A. We Should Be Awed By His Holiness.
1Peter 1:15-18–“But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
B. We Should Be Awed By His Greatness.
1 Chronicles 16:25–“For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods.”
Psalm 145:3–“. . .His greatness is unsearchable.”
C. We Should Be Awed By His Promises.
2 Corinthians 7:1–“Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”
II. BE A WHOLE-HEARTED CHRISTIAN.
I hate when somebody does something half-hearted or with no heart.
Jeremiah 17:9–“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
Proverbs 4:23–“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
We should keep our hearts guarded from the influence of this world, the lusts of our flesh, and the temptations of the devil.
A. Seek God With Your Whole Heart.
Jeremiah 29:13–“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”
Psalms 119:2-- “Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.”
B. Turn To God With Your Whole Heart.
Joel 2:12–“Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:”
C. Love God With Your Whole Heart.
Deuteronomy 30:2–“And shalt return unto the Lord thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul;
Mt.22:37–“ Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”
D. Follow God With Your Whole Heart.
Hosea 6:3–“Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD:”
Ps.119:34–“ Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.”
E. Trust In God With Your Whole Heart.
Proverbs.3:5–“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart. . .”
III. CONCENTRATE ON THE TWO GREAT COMMANDMENTS.
The whole of the Word of God can be summed up in two commandments:
A. The Commandment On How To Love God.
Matthew 22:35–“Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.”
B. The Commandment On How To Love Others.
Matthew 22:39–“And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
1. We Need To Love The Lost.
2. We Need To Love The Saints.
IV. DEVELOP A HATRED FOR SIN.
A. God Hates Sin.
Proverbs 8:13–“The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.”
B. We Should Hate Sin.
Romans 12:9–“Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.”
1 Thessalonians 5:22–“Abstain from all appearance of evil.”
C. When We Hate Sin We Will Not Tolerate It In Our Lives.
The more we learn to love God, the more we will learn to hate sin.
V. MAKE GOD’S WORD A PRIORITY IN YOUR LIFE.
A. Daily Read From God’s Word.
Romans 10:17–“ So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
B. Hide God’s Word In Your Heart.
Psalm 119:11–“Thy Word have I his in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
C. Walk In The Word.
Psalm 119:9–“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy Word.”
Galatians 5:16–“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
John 6:63–“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”
VI. ESTABLISH A REGULAR DAILY PRAYER LIFE. (Luke 11:1-4)
Matthew 26:41–“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Psalms 55:16-17–“As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.”
1 Thessalonians 5:17–“ Pray without ceasing.”
VII. DON’T ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE INFLUENCED BY SINFUL PEOPLE.
Proverbs 1:10–“My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.”
Proverbs 4:14-15–“ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.”
I Corinthians 5:11–13--“ But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.”
II Corinthians 6:14–16–“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God;”
VIII. ESTABLISH CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS WITH FAITHFUL CHRISTIANS.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10–“ Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.”
Matthew 18:19-20--“Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
Hebrews 10:25–“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
VIII. AVOID TEMPTATIONS ESPECIALLY IN YOUR AREAS OF WEAKNESS.
II Peter 3:17–“Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
A. Don’t Let Satan Fool You Into Thinking You Are Alone In Your Temptation.
I Corinthians 10:13–“ There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
Hebrews 2:18–“For in that He Himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succor them that are tempted.”
B. Remember How The Bible Says Man Is Tempted.
James 1:14-15–“ But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”
C. We Are To Endure Temptations.
James 1:12–“Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”
