HOW TO BE SURE THAT YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN

1 JOHN 5:13

Introduction

What were the events which led up to the time that you became a Christian? Can you look at your life prior to your getting saved and see the hand of God bringing you to that point in your life?

Since the time that you have been saved, have you had any doubts that you really are a Christian? Would you like to get rid of the doubts?

There is a need for assurance of our Salvation in our lives. Satan would like for us to doubt and to continue in our doubts. If we are full of doubt and uncertainty we will not be what we should be for Christ.

God wants His Children to know that they belong to Him. He wants us to recognize His voice and follow Him as children do their fathers.

God’s Word is written for this purpose. 1 John 5:13 says, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”

I.         MISUNDERSTANDING SALVATION CAN CAUSE DOUBTS.

At salvation, God’s Holy Spirit comes into our lives and begins to convict us of things that grieve our Heavenly Father:

The Holy Spirit Convicts Us Of Words That Grieve Our Heavenly Father.

The Holy Spirit Convicts Us Of Actions That Grieve Our Heavenly Father.

The Holy Spirit Convicts Us Of Attitudes That Grieve Our Heavenly Father.

Because of this, we may feel like a greater sinner than we were before our Salvation.

1 Timothy 1:15– “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.”

The Basic Aspects Of Our Salvation:

            1.         Conviction. (John 16:8-11)

Our sins have cut us off from God’s life.

Without conviction, there can be no Salvation!

                        a.         Conviction of Sin.     (Romans 3:10, 23)

                        b.        Conviction of Righteousness. (John 3:16; Romans 3: 21-24; 5:8)

                        c.         Conviction of Judgment. (Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:10-15)

            2.         Salvation. (John 1:12; 3:16-18; Romans 10:9-10)

Christ has given Himself freely for us, we must freely receive Him.

                        a.         Salvation Is Not In Just Believing In God! (James 2:19)

                        b.        Salvation Is Not In Praying A Sinner’s Prayer! (Acts 16:30-31)

                        c.         Salvation Is Not In Just Agreeing With The Facts About Jesus’ Death Burial, And Resurrection! (Matthew 7:21-23)

                        d.        Salvation Is Not Just Believing In Your Head! (Romans 10:9-10)

                        e.         Salvation Is Believing In Your Heart! (Romans 10:9-10)

                        f.         Salvation Is A Relationship With Christ Jesus! (John 1:12)

                        g.         Salvation Is A Total Reliance Upon Christ For Salvation! (John 3:16)

            3.         Assurance.

                        a.         Once we are saved we are “born again” Spiritually! (Ephesians 2:1; John 3:3, 6; 1 John 5:10-13)

                        b.        We are “in Christ” and Christ is in us! (Romans 8:9-10)

                        c.         We are Christ’s sheep, we hear His voice, and we follow Him!

                                    (John 10:27-29)

            4.         Transformation (Growth).

As we fill our soul with God’s Word and allow the Holy Spirit to fill our lives,

we are conformed more and more into the image of Christ.

                        (Romans 8:29; Ephesians 5:18)

                        a.         We Should Have A Hunger For The Word. (1 Peter 2:2)

                        b.        We Should Not Conform To The World. (Romans 12:2)

                        c.         We Should Be Transformed By The Renewing Our Minds.

            5.         Consummation.

In eternity we will be like Christ for we will see Him as He is.

                        (1 John 3:2; Romans 8:29)

II.       FAILING TO GROW CAN CAUSE DOUBTS.    (2 (2 Peter 1:4-9; 1 John 1:5-10)

III.      LACKING A “BIRTH DATE” CAN CAUSE DOUBTS.

Many people have doubts about their Salvation because they cannot recall a point in time when they put their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

            A.        God Compares Salvation To Birth. (John 3:3)

            B.        God Compares Salvation To Marriage. (Revelation 22:17)

Both of these events involve a process afterward, but are celebrated at a point in time when the event actually transpired. Note however, there have been people who remember the event, just not the date of the event. What is important is that the event did happen!

IV.     HARBORING BITTERNESS CAN CAUSE DOUBTS.

(Matthew 6:12, 14-15)

In the “Lord’s Prayer” we are taught to ask God to forgive us in the same way that we forgive those who offend us.

Based on this we cannot expect assurance of Salvation if we don’t fully forgive others.

Conclusion

It is important for you to take measures to be sure that you are saved if you are unsure!

(2 Corinthians 13:5)   Are you sure? Are you sure that you are sure?

It is important to help others who struggle with this matter to be sure! Do you know of someone who isn’t sure that you could help make sure?
