CHAPTER 1--ONE WAY, ONE TRUTH, ONE LIFE, ONCE TO DIE
JOHN 14:6
I. SOCIETY WILL TELL US THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT WAYS TO OVERCOMING ADDICTIONS.
A. SOCIETY’S SAYS THAT ONE WAY TO OVERCOMING ADDICTIONS IS THROUGH SELF-HELP PROGRAMS.
1. We Are Told That We Must Think Highly Of Ourselves And Remove Our Low Self-Esteem.
The idea is that being proud of ourselves is the best way to overcome hardships.
What does God say about pride?
Proverbs 16:18–“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
Proverbs 29:23–“A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.”
Proverbs 14:12–“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”
2. God Wants Us To Humble Ourselves, Admit We Need His Help And Give Ourselves To Him.
James 4:10–“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”
1 Peter 5:5b-7--“God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
B. SOCIETY’S SAYS THAT ANOTHER WAY TO OVERCOME ADDICTIONS IS THROUGH THE SUPPORT OF FRIENDS.
1. When We Have Friends Show Us The Way To Freedom, It Can Often Lead Us Away From God.
Psalm 1:1–“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”
Psalm 1:6–“For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.”
2 Corinthians 6:14–“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? ”
2. God Is The Only One We Should Allow To Give Us Direction In Our Way Of Freedom.
Psalm 32:8–“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”
Psalm 37:23–“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.”
C. SOCIETY SAYS THAT ANOTHER WAY TO OVERCOME ADDICTIONS IS THROUGH SOCIAL PROGRAMS.
1. They Tell Us That The Path To Freedom Is Wide And All Inclusive.
There are no restrictions on their path and we can wind up bringing new addictions into our lives as we overcome others.
2. Jesus Said That The Road To Freedom Leads One Way, Through Him; And The Only Way To Enter Is Through The Strait Gate.
By “strait,” the Bible is talking about narrow; close; not broad.
Matthew 7:13-14–“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
D. SOCIETY SAYS THERE ARE MANY WAYS, BUT JESUS SAID THAT HE IS THE WAY.
John 14:6–“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
John 10:1-10–“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. 4And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. 5And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. 6This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them. 7Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. 8All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. 9I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. 10The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
II. SOCIETY WILL TELL US THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TRUTHS THAT WE CAN BELIEVE.
A. God Teaches Us That The Best Way To Discern Through The Truth And A Lie Is Through His Word.
John 17:17–“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
1. Here Is A Lie: Some say that how we live will not affect our fellowship with a loving God.
2. Here Is The Truth:
1 John 1:6–“If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
1 John 1:7–“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
3. Here Is A Lie: Some say that there is no absolute right or wrong.
4. Here Is The Truth:
1 John 1:8–“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1 John 1:10–“If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”
1 John 1:9–“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
5. Here Is A Lie: Some claim to be Christians but then continue in their ungodly lifestyles without it ever bothering them.
6. Here Is The Truth:
1 John 2:4–“He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1 John 2:3–“And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.”
1 John 2:5-6--“But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.”
7. Here Is A Lie: Some in Society will say that Jesus was a great man, maybe even a prophet, but they will stop short of saying that He was the Christ. (The Atoning One!)
1 John 2:22-23–“Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. 23Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.”
8. Here Is The Truth: Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that is, He is God in the flesh!
John 3:16–“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
B. The Devil Is The Father Of Lies.
John 8:44-45–“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 45And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.”
C. God Is The Father Of Truth.
John 14:6–“Jesus (God’s son) saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
D. God Uses Truth As The Basis For Freedom From Sin And Addictions. Thus, The More Truth We Know, The Better Our Chances Of Freedom.
John 8:31-32–“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”
E. John 8:31-32 Contains The Formula For Freedom From Addictions And Bondage.
1. Believe On Jesus. (i.e. Have Faith In God)
Mark 9:23–“Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”
2. Continue In Jesus’ Word (The Bible).
John 15:7–“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.”
2 Timothy 3:14-17
3. Be A Disciple Of Christ! (Follow Him With Your Life.)
Matthew 16:24-25–“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.”
4. Continue To Learn More About Jesus! (Know The Truth.)
2 Peter 3:18–“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
1 Peter 2:2–“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:”
Hebrews 5:13-14–“For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”
5. Jesus (The Truth) Shall Make Us Free!
John 8:36–“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
F. REMAINING FREE FROM ADDICTIONS WILL REQUIRE SOME DISCIPLINE ON OUR PART.
1. We Have A Free Will And Can Choose To Return To Our Bondage.
Proverbs 26:11–“As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.”
2. Serving The Lord With Our Lives Will Preoccupy Our Time. It Will Help Us Avoid Temptation.
Romans 6:18–“Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.”
3. Being Unmovable In The Truth Will Keep The Devil From Returning.
Galatians 5:1–“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
III. SOCIETY MAY TELL US THAT OUR LIVES ARE DEPENDENT UPON WHAT WE, AS A PEOPLE, MAKE OF IT.
A. Some Will Tell Us That The Accrual Of Earthly Possessions Demonstrates A Successful Life.
Luke 12:15–“Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
B. Jesus Taught That God Will Provide All Our Needs.
Philippians 4:19–“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
C. Learn From The Mistakes Of The Rich Man When Determining Goals In Life. (Luke 12:16-23)
D. Loving God, Rather Than Loving The World, Will Result In True Happiness. (1 John 2:15-17)
E. Giving Our Lives To God And Trusting Him Wholly With Our Lives Results In His Taking Care Of Our Needs.
Luke 12:31–“But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
IV. SOCIETY MAY TELL US THAT WE ONLY HAVE ONE LIFE TO LIVE SO WE MIGHT AS WELL LIVE IT UP.
A. Jesus Taught That This Life Should Be Sacrificed So That He Can Bless Us With A Better Life.
Luke 17:33–“Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.”
Proverbs 8:35–“For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.”
B. There Is Only One Life In This World, But There Is Another Life After This.
Luke 18:29-30–“And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake, Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.”
C. This Life Will End One Day And Then There Is God’s Judgment.
Hebrews 9:27–“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”
Matthew 12:36–“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.”
2 Corinthians 5:10–“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”
2 Peter 2:9–“The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:”
V. THE LIFE THAT GOD WANTS TO GIVE TO YOU IS ATTAINABLE AND ETERNAL.
A. It Is Attainable Through Belief (Faith, Trust) In Jesus Christ.
John 3:14-15–“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
(Refer to handout–ARE YOU GOING TO HEAVEN WHEN YOU DIE?!!!)
B. Believe In Your Heart That God Sent Jesus To Die For Your Sins And Raised Him From The Dead, And Confess Him As Your Saviour And You Will Be Saved.
C. This Belief In Jesus Will Save You From Eternal Separation From God In Hell And Replace It With Eternal Life With God In Heaven!
D. When This Happens In Your Life, You Have Made The First Step To Overcoming The Strongholds That Have A Grip On You!
It is a step that you cannot do without!
If you are to truly have victory in your life over these strongholds, you must have God in your life to help you overcome that which you cannot overcome alone!
