REMEMBERING THE GOOD OLD DAYS
PSALMS 143:5
Introduction:
What comes to your mind when you think of “the good old days?”
Most of the time we remember the good things to the exclusion of the bad things don’t we!
The Children of Israel were that way in Numbers 11:5–“We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic: 6But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.”
They seemed to forget the harsh bondage that they suffered at the hands of the Egyptians.
The psalmist said in Psalm 77:5–“I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.”
I think it does us good to consider the days of old and years of ancient times. . .both the good and the old! I believe that it is from considering those days of old and ancient times that we get catch a glimpse of how we got where we are. We can look back and understand what works and what doesn’t. We can understand what gets us in trouble with God and what glorifies God.
This Church was conceived in late June of 1966 when Bro. Bob Adams preached a Revival in the Lions Club building. The Church was actually birthed when it was organized in late January of 1967.
Let me share with you a list of the conditions as they were in 1966:

On June 2, The US space probe Surveyor 1 had become the first spacecraft to have soft landed on something other than earth.
On June 5, Gene Cernan completed the second U.S. spacewalk (which lasted 2 hours, 7 minutes) on the Gemini 9 mission.
The first Lunar Orbiter missions, which had the purpose of mapping the lunar surface before the Apollo landings, was still almost two months from being launched.
On June 13, The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Miranda v. Arizona that the police must inform suspects of their rights before questioning them
I had just turned 10 years old having just finished Miss Priscilla Ratcliff’s 4th grade class. I had aspirations of being an astronaut. The next year was the last I remember Bible reading and prayer in the classroom.
Medicare was about to begin on July 1.
The first Star Trek episode had yet to be shown on TV (September 8)
CBS backed out of plans to broadcast Psycho, deeming the movie too violent for at-home viewing.
Walt Disney’s life came to an end.
The Food and Drug Administration declared "the Pill" safe for human use.
We could be here all day discussing whether those good old days were good or not and what aspects of them were good and bad.
I think we all can understand that our society has made a lot of advancements that have made many things better than they once were. (Medicine, technology)
But I think we all can also understand that our society has also lost a lot of things that have caused us to not be better off in some respects. (Especially when it comes to spiritual things.)
Nevertheless, I want us to look at some things about “Remembering The Good Old Days.”
I. IT IS BECAUSE OF THE GOOD OLD DAYS THAT WE BELONG TO GOD!
A. What God Did In The Past.
Psalms 74:2–“Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.”
B. What Others Have Done In The Past.
1. The Apostles.
2. Those Who God Used To Preserve His Word.
3. Those God Used To Spread The Gospel.
4. Those God Used To Plant Churches.
5. Those God Used To Reach Us Personally.
II. IT IS BECAUSE OF THE GOOD OLD DAYS THAT WE HAD BETTER TRUST GOD!
Psalms 77:11–“I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.”
A. His Work Of Creation.
Colossians 1:16-17–“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”
God has a will for our lives! To bring honor and glory to Him.
Ephesians 5:17–“Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”
IT IS BECAUSE OF THE GOOD OLD DAYS THAT WE HAD BETTER TRUST GOD!
His Work Of Creation.
B. His Works Of Revelation, Inspiration, Preservation and Illumination.
Proverbs 30:5–“Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.”
1 Peter 1:23–“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.”
Matthew 24:35–“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”
John 6:63–“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”
C. His Work Of Salvation.
He thought it, He sought it, He wrought it, and He bought it.
Hebrews 2:3–“How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;”
IT IS BECAUSE OF THE GOOD OLD DAYS THAT WE BELONG TO GOD!
What God did. . .What others have done.
IT IS BECAUSE OF THE GOOD OLD DAYS THAT WE HAD BETTER TRUST GOD! His Works Of Creation. . .Revelation, Inspiration, Preservation, and Illumination . . . Salvation.
III. IT IS BECAUSE OF THE GOOD OLD DAYS THAT WE ARE BETTER THROUGH GOD!
Psalms 119:52–“I remembered thy judgments of old, O LORD; and have comforted myself.”
God uses all different kinds of things in our lives to bring us into his likeness.
Deuteronomy 8:2–“And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. 3And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.”
IV. IT IS BECAUSE OF THE GOOD OLD DAYS THAT WE HAD BEST STAY TRUE TO GOD.
Proverbs 23:10–“Remove not the old landmark;”
Proverbs 22:28–“Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.”
Hebrews 2:1–“Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.”
We need to hold true to the great things of old that have been passed down to us.
Jude 3–“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”
We need to pass those old truths to future generations.
Deuteronomy 6:6–“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”
