THE TREASURES OF THE SNOW

JOB 38:22

Introduction

Job 38:22 “Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow ?.......”

I don’t know of many people who live where it snows often and a lot, who would consider snow as a treasure, yet the Bible says that there are treasures in the snow.

I have waited until it was suppose to snow on a Sunday to preach this message.

Personally, I like snow–I like to see it come, but then I like to see it go.

There are some lessons that God would have us to learn from the snow.....there are treasures in the snow that God would have us to see and consider.

How is snow a treasure?:

I.        SNOW IS A TREASURE BECAUSE OF ITS PROVIDER.       (Job 37:5-6)

Psalm 148:8–“Fire, and hail; snow, and vapor; stormy wind fulfilling His word:”

The word “treasure” here means “depository.”

It carries with it the idea of God storing up snow, and dispensing it at his choosing.

Scientists tell us that snowflakes are actually born in clouds containing moisture. The conditions must be just right for this to take place. The temperature must be well below the freezing point of water.

Tiny snow crystals are formed, and as they get heavier they begin to fall, and as they fall they get larger because they pick up more moisture in the atmosphere.

Who controls the conditions in the atmosphere.....who created the clouds that act as the storehouse......who dispenses the snow at his choosing?

If God is in control of the snow, and if God can dispense the snow upon the earth....can he not also dispense all the things in life that we need ?

James 1:17–“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

SNOW IS A TREASURE BECAUSE OF ITS PROVIDER.

II.       SNOW IS A TREASURE BECAUSE OF ITS PECULIARITY.

Did you know that there are many different shapes of snowflakes?

There are 10 general categories that snowflakes fall into. Under a microscope you could see some that are like needles....some like stars.....some like trees......some look like fishbones......some look like bullets......yet there is the amazing thing about them that most all of us learned in elementary school. No two snowflakes are exactly the same!

Snowflakes have their own shape.....their own identity. They each are unique.

People are like the snow in this respect. Of the billions of people on the earth now.....and all of those who walked here previously, and all of those who are yet to be born into the world....there are no two people who are just alike.

Now we have similarities......but we each have distinct characteristics that separate us from everyone else. Our fingerprints are unique. Our footprints unique. Our DNA is unique. Even the pattern of our eyeballs are unique from anyone else’s. What does this say about God and us ?

             A.       Like Snow We Have A Designer.

We have a creator that knew us before we were formed in the womb, and who knit us together distinctly from all others before us!

            B.       Like Snow We Have A Distinction.

We are special. We are not only distinct in the way that we look, but God has a distinct purpose for each one of our lives. We are a thing of value.

God has a purpose for the snow and He has a purpose for us.

            C.       Like Snow We Have A Destiny.

Snow has more of a purpose than just to grace our landscape with beauty.

If we can see that God has a purpose even in the smallest of things such as a snowflake, surely we can see that God has a purpose for our lives !

III.      SNOW IS A TREASURE BECAUSE OF ITS PURITY.

In the Bible, snow is used as an example of purity:

Psalms 51:7–“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”

Snow has a powerful cleansing effect on the atmosphere....sometimes called “wash-out or snow-out”

Snow is actually formed around some matter already existing in the atmosphere....a piece of dirt......mica.

When snow falls, it provides a covering. It covers ugly sights (junk cars; trash piles).

And gives everything a fresh, clean appearance.

God likens the forgiveness of sins to the whiteness of snow.

Isaiah 1:18–“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

            A.       We All Have Been Corrupted By Sin.

            B.       None Of Us Can Conceal The Stain Of Sin.

            C.       Through The Blood Of Jesus, We Can Be As White As Snow Before God.

SNOW IS A TREASURE BECAUSE OF ITS PROVIDER, PECULIARITY, PURITY...

IV.      SNOW IS A TREASURE BECAUSE OF ITS PRODUCTIVITY.

Proverbs 25:13–“As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.”

Scientists tell us that snow picks up nitrogen in the air when it is formed, and then dispenses it upon the earth as it melts.....thus aiding the productivity of the ground.

So, snow makes a impact. It has a positive influence on the productivity of the ground. God wants our lives to make an impact and to have an influence on the hearts of men.

             A.       Productivity Begins With The Father.

We’ve already said that snow originates from God. It is dispersed by him.

In order for our lives to really have purpose and to be productive, they must begin with a relationship with the Father.

            B.       Productivity Becomes Possible When We Fall. (Not in sin!)

As the snow falls, it becomes larger, and picks up ingredients in the atmosphere which are useful on the earth.

We become more productive in our lives when we fall in two ways:

                        1.         In humility before God.

As long as we are lifted up in pride, we remain unfruitful.

James 4:6-7--“6But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

James 4:10–“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”

Matthew 23:12–“And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.”

                        2.         In prayer to God (on our knees).

SNOW IS A TREASURE BECAUSE OF ITS PROVIDER, PECULIARITY, PURITY, PRODUCTIVITY. . .

V.       SNOW IS A TREASURE BECAUSE OF ITS POWER!

We usually look at snow for its beauty, for it’s recreational purposes–sledding, skiing, and snowboarding–but seldom do we think of snow as being precious, as in a precious commodity.

Think about this for a minute:

About 20 % of the world’s land mass is permanently covered by snow.

In the Northern Hemisphere, it is about 40 %.

Fresh snow falls on 1 out of every 4 square miles of dry land each year.

1/3 of the world’s water used for irrigation comes from snow.

In the Western U.S. nearly 75 % of water used for irrigation comes from snow.

Snowfall flows on to the scene in the most useful times of the year–just prior to spring.

Snow is stored in higher elevations until late spring and early summer and then it melts in time to help in the irrigation of crops.

It is snow that powers the great rivers of the west–the Rio Grande, the Colorado, the Missouri, the Columbia.

It is estimated that melted snow produces 26 trillion gallons a water alone each year in the Columbia River. That’s enough water to cover the state of Kansas in knee deep water or to raise the level of Lake Michigan by six foot.

God can use something as small as a snowflake combined with other snowflakes as a source of power.

In the same way, God has the power to change us, and then to use us as His instruments.

We may not be much by ourselves, but together with others in the local Church and with other Christians worldwide, we are a force to be reckoned with.

VI.      SNOW IS A TREASURE BECAUSE OF ITS PASSAGE.

It is only here for a short time–sometimes not short enough for me–then it melts away.

James 4:14–“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life ? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

            A.       Like Snow We Do Not Remain.

            B.       Like Snow We Do Not Return.

            C.       Like Snow We Do Not Retain.

We shall be changed......doth not yet appear.

Conclusion

Such treasures in the snow. Snow that can help us see the Father.

As it comes down today, I want you to think of it in the way we’ve talked about it.

We are of much greater value than even snow!

God wants to wash us, and clean us to the point that we are whiter than snow !

Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power? Are you washed in the blood of the lamb?

Isaiah 1:18–“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

SNOW IS A TREASURE BECAUSE OF ITS PROVIDER, PECULIARITY, PURITY, PRODUCTIVITY, POWER, AND ITS PASSAGE. . .
