THE LORD'S PASSOVER
EXODUS 12:1-14
Introduction
The children of Israel were in Egypt according to the prophecy given unto Abraham in Genesis 15:13–“Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years.”
400 years had passed since the children of Israel had been in Egypt. The children of Israel were being afflicted by the Egyptians and God was now ready to redeem His people just as He had promised Abraham in Genesis 15:14– “And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.”
In Exodus 3:7-10, the story is told of how God appeared to Moses from the midst of a burning bush.
In Exodus 4:21-23, God told Moses what would happen before Pharaoh with regard to the wonders Moses would perform.
Moses went before Pharaoh just as God told him to do and said all that God told him to say. Pharaoh’s reaction was basically to question the authority of God because He didn’t know Moses’ God.
God proceeded to plague the Egyptians. Each plague God brought by Moses hand was directly against each of the gods that the Egyptians worshiped.
1) God turned the river into blood. (7 days)
(Pharaoh hardened his heart)
2) God sent a plague of frogs upon the land.
(Take them away and I’ll let you go!)
(Pharaoh hardened his heart)
3) God sent a plague of lice upon the land.
(Pharaoh hardened his heart)
4) God sent a plague of flies.
(The land was corrupted–maggots.)
(Pharaoh tried to compromise with Moses)
a. Stay in Egypt and sacrifice.
b. Don’t go too far to sacrifice.
(Pharaoh hardened his heart.)
5) God sent a plague of murrain (pestilence) on the cattle.
(Pharaoh hardened his heart)
6) God sent a plague of boils and blains (erupting sores).
(The Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart)
7) God sent a plague of hail and fire mingled with hail.
(Pharaoh had a false repentance until the hail ceased, then he hardened his heart)
(Pharaoh tried to compromise again–only the men could go.)
8) God sent a plague of locusts.
(Pharaoh had a false repentance until the locusts were gone, then the Lord hardened his heart once again.)
9) God sent a plague of darkness that could be felt.
(Pharaoh tried to compromise again–He said go, but leave your flocks behind)
(Pharaoh ‘s heart was hardened again.)
Then we come to Exodus 12 where God is about to redeem the children of Israel by the plague upon the firstborn.
Read Exodus 12:1-14
Romans 15:4 says, “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”
