SOME GREAT ASPECTS OF GOD

EXODUS 3:1-15

Introduction

This is the account of where God called Moses to deliver the Children of Israel out of Egypt.

We see here that Moses is on the back-side of the desert tending to his father-in-law’s sheep.

If you will remember, he fled to Midian after killing the Egyptian who was afflicting a fellow Hebrew. The Bible says that Moses was content to dwell there with Jethro and married one of his daughters, Zipporah. So Moses has a wife and a son at this time and is quite content.

According to verse 1, Moses led his father-in-law’s sheep to Mount Horeb. (Called the mountain of God here and is also known as Mt. Sinai.) No one is present but Moses and God. We see that God got Moses’ attention with a bush that was burning but was not consumed by the flames.

God spoke to Moses out of the midst of the bush. God identified Himself in verse 6 and Moses hid his face out of fear.

God then told Moses that He had heard the affliction of Israel. He then revealed to Moses His plan to use Him to deliver the Children of Israel out of bondage bring them into the Promised Land.

God told Moses to go in to Pharaoh and tell him to let the people of God go. However, we see that Moses was reluctant and hesitant to do this. (Vs 11)

Then in verse 13, the conversation changed to the children of Israel, and Moses asked God what name he should use in convincing the Israelites to go with him. God then makes the statement that has been repeated many, many times since.

Exodus 3:14–“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you."

God revealed Himself to Moses as the “I AM.”

There are two important ideas that grow out of this disclosure of God’s personal name:

1)        God is declared to be a personal God.

He is not an impersonal force, like gravity. In biblical times, the disclosure of one’s name was a very personal act, that disclosed one’s very nature.

God here shows His love for the Hebrew people by initiating a personal, intimate relationship in the disclosure of His name to them. The Almighty Sovereign Creator stooped to reveal His intimate, personal name to people whom He has chosen to be His people.

2)        The personal name of God suggests that He is a living God, not a dead object or abstract idea.

There is a certain mystery to the name “I AM THAT I AM.” We might say, “What kind of name is that?”

This name suggests that God is eternal, without beginning and without ending.

God made it clear that He was the same God who had been with the Hebrew people from their beginning, from the call of Abraham.

So this name expresses God’s real, perfect, unconditional, independent existence.

God exists in a way that no other one and no other thing does.

God is without beginning or end. God is the only Being who is self-existent.

All other existence is dependent upon God’s uncaused existence.

In the New Testament Jesus connected Himself to and used variations of the name “I AM” several times to describe Himself.

John 6:35–“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”

John 8:12–“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

John 8:58–“Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.”

John 10:9–“I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. ”

John 10:11–“I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”

John 11:25–“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:”

John 14:6–“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

John 15:1–“I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.”

Have you ever stopped to think why God did not continue the phrase in Exodus 3:14?

Why did He just say, "I AM THAT I AM"? Why didn’t He go ahead and state what HE WAS? You see, there is no beginning and no ending to God.

            There are no boundaries.

There is no height nor depth limit.

            God is without boundary.

Had he stated what HE WAS that would have limited Himself to that particular claim.

He is the “I AM THAT I AM". What is that? He is whatever you need. Whatever He says happens.

If you need a Comforter, He is a Comforter.

If you need a Provider, He is a Provider.

If you need a Saviour, He is a Saviour.

If you need an Anchor, He is the Anchor.

If you need an understanding Listener, He is just that.

There is no limit to the one who is the "I AM THAT I AM." We can't explain God.

We can't adequately describe Him except what He has given us in the Bible.

I want to give you some things about God that all of us have experienced many times and often overlook or forget about. I want us to look at some of the–GREAT ASPECTS OF GOD.

I.         THE GREATNESS OF GOD’S GOODNESS.

            A.        Definition:

I want to give you several definitions of “goodness.” Webster defines it as:

The state or quality of being good; the physical qualities which constitute value, excellence, or perfection.

The moral qualities which constitute excellence; moral virtue; religion.

(i.e. The fruit of the Spirit)

Kindness; benevolence of nature; compassion or mercy; acts of benevolence; and charity.

            B.        We use the phrase, "God is good."

                        1.         Of course He is good; He can't be anything else. He is good because He is God.

                        2.         God is not good because of what He does, but He is good because of who He is.

                        3.         God is not God because He is good; He is good because He is God.

Psalm 107:8-9–"Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! {9} For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness."

                        5.         God HAS given us that which we do not deserve–GRACE.

                        6.         God HAS NOT given that which we do deserve–MERCY.

            C.        We should praise God for His goodness.

                        1.         It is far beyond our imagination.

                        2.         Can you imagine what life would be like without the goodness of God being bestowed on us?

                        3.         Do you suppose it would be the very likeness of hell itself?

            THE GREATNESS OF GOD’S GOODNESS.

II.       THE GREATNESS OF GOD’S GLORY.

            A.        The Glory Of God Is Seen Through The Suffering Of His Saints.

                        1.         Stephen. Cf Acts 7:54-60.

                                    a.         Stoned to death for his witness for Christ.

                                    b.         And as he was about to die, he saw Jesus.

                                    c.         He gave glory to God with his dying breath.

                        2.         John on the isle of Patmos.

                                    a.         Boiled alive in hot oil.

                                    b.         Exiled on the Isle of Patmos and left to die.

                                    c.         But God wasn't finished with him yet.

                        3.         Many Others Through The Centuries:

                                    a.         Only God knows the depths of their suffering.

                                    b.         But they continued to glorify God and witness to others.

                                    c.         God was glorified in their suffering.

            B.        The Glory Of God Is Seen Through The Sinlessness Of His Son.

                        1.         Through His Majesty.

John 17:4-5--"I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. {5} And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was."

                        2.         Through His Manifestation.

John 17:6–“I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.”

                        3.         Through His Message.

John 17:8– “For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.”

                        4.         Through His Might.

John 17:2–“As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.”

The Glory Of God Is Seen Through The Suffering Of His Saints.

The Glory Of God Is Seen Through The Sinlessness Of His Son.

            C.        The Glory Of God Is Seen Through The Substitute for Sin.

                        1.         Only God could die for sin.

                        2.         Only God could pay the ransom price.

                        3.         Only the Creator could die for the creation.

                        4.         The Son of God became the Substitute for sin.

                        5.         He gave His body to be the payment for the penalty of man’s sin; and in so doing provided a way of escape for sinful man.

                                    a.         See Him as He hangs on the Old Rugged Cross, so despised by man.

                                    b.         See Him as He suffers the agony and pain of sin for you and for me.

                                    c.         See Him as He looks toward His Heavenly Father for comfort and compassion and the Father turns from Him because of our sin that was placed on Him.

                                    d.         See Him as He dies alone without anyone to comfort Him.

                        6.         It's hard for humanity to see any glory in such an episode; but all the while the wicked one was being stripped of his power over mankind.

            THE GREATNESS OF GOD’S GOODNESS.

THE GREATNESS OF GOD’S GLORY.

III.      THE GREATNESS OF GOD’S GIFT.

John 3:16–"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Romans 6:23–"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Matthew 11:28-29–"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. {29} Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls."

            A.        What is a gift?

                        1.         A true gift is something that is given through grace and love.

                        2.         A true gift is something that cannot be earned.

            B.        Most of what we give as gifts to friends is merely some type of payback.

                        1.         God didn't owe man anything.

                        2.         If someone takes us out to lunch we feel obligated to repay the favor.

                        3.         A true gift does not demand repayment of any kind.

            C.        Man had nothing coming, thus, God did not pay back…He paid it all.

Ephesians 1:4–"According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:"
