ARE YOU ON THE LORD’S SIDE?
1 CHRONICLES 12:18
Introduction:
I want to use one phrase from our text as my subject. "Thine are we, David, and on thy side…"
The larger context is the story of David's being made an outlaw by Saul. David is in hiding and at this time many have come to his side. Nevertheless, the majority of the people were still siding with Saul whom God had taken His hand of blessing off of.
In the group that sided with David, there were those who knew that God had anointed David to be Israel's king and so they were willing to take a stand in spite of the consequences.
David's situation is not only historical but it is typical as well.
Here we see that David typifies, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Just as David was the rightful King, our Lord is the rightful king today. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!
Philippians 2:9–“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:”
Unfortunately, comparatively few people have given him his rightful place. The majority have chosen the "popular" side against the Lord Jesus Christ.
I want us to focus our attention on the type of men who chose to follow David. There is much to be learned from studying their character.
We see in their character the type of men and women who are needed today in the service of Jesus Christ the true king.
Galatians 3:28–“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”
I. THE LORD NEEDS MEN AND WOMEN FROM EVERY TRIBE AND NATION.
(1 Chronicles 12:22-37)
A. Here We Find Different Types Of Men Coming To David From Every Tribe.
Did you know that God is calling to Himself a people from all over this world!
Mark 16:15–“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”
B. God Needs Men And Women Of All Types And From All Nations Today In This Dispensation Of Grace.
Galatians 3:28–“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”
In Acts 15:1-17, there were certain Judaizers would have limited the gospel to those who were practicing Jews only, Paul, Barnabas, Peter and James let it be known that the message was always to be for all men.
C. Just As Men Came To David Daily, The Holy Spirit Is Calling Men And Women To Jesus.
1. Consider Acts 2:47–“And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”
2. Each one of us should determine if we have properly responded to the Gospel call from God in our lives. (i.e. have we come to the Lord’s side?)
THE LORD NEEDS MEN AND WOMEN FROM EVERY TRIBE AND NATION.
II. THE LORD NEEDS MEN AND WOMEN WHO ARE SEPARATED UNTO HIM.
(1 Chronicles 12:8)
A. The Need Of The Church Today Is For Men And Women Who Are Truly Separated Unto The Lord.
1. To fail to separate from the world is wrong.
1 Peter 1:15-16–“But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
2. To separate from the world and not unto the Lord is wrong.
To do so causes us to become self righteousness.
B. Consider What The Scriptures Say:
1.2 Timothy 2:4–“No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
2.2 Corinthians 6:17–“Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,”
C. Separation Unto The Lord Involves: (1 Chronicles 12:8)
1. Separation From That Which Is Against The Lord.
2. Separation Unto The Lord.
a. Being Fit For The Service For The Lord.
b. Using What We Have For The Lord.
III. THE LORD NEEDS MEN AND WOMEN WHO ARE FULLY TRAINED AND EQUIPPED FOR WARFARE.
(1 Chronicles 12:2,8,38)
A. We Are Engaged In A Warfare Against A Strong Army.
Ephesians 6:12–“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
B. Any Military Venture Demands Proper Training, Discipline And Equipment.
God has given us these things, but we must appropriate them in our lives.
C. There Are Two Particular Weapons Believers Need To Be Familiar With.
1. The Word Of God.
Hebrews 4:12–“For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
2. The Prayer Of Faith.
James 5:15 speaks of “. . . the prayer of faith. . .”
James 5:17-18–“Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.”
D. Believers Must Have An Understanding Of The Times. (1 Chronicles 12:32)
These words indicate that these were intelligent men, who understood the signs of the times and were well versed in what was going on around them.
2 Timothy 3:1-5
E. Believers Must Have An Understanding Of What They Ought To Do.
(1 Chronicles 12:32)
Proverbs 14:8–“The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.”
Ephesians 5:17–“Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”
V. THE LORD NEEDS MEN AND WOMEN OF SUPERNATURAL STRENGTH.
(1 Chronicles 12:8b,21)
A. Spirit Filled Believers Doing The Work Of God Have The Strength Of The Lord Himself.
Deuteronomy 32:30–“How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?”
B. There Are Many Scriptural Examples Of Men Who Served God With Supernatural Power From God.
1. When David fought with Goliath, He did it with the help of the LORD!
2.When Gideon and his 300 men defeated the Midianite host, He did it with the help of the LORD!
3.When Peter preached on the day of Pentecost and saw 3000 saved, He did so with the help of the LORD!
C. God Expects His People To Work In The Power Of The Holy Spirit.
Zechariah 4:6–“Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This [is] the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.”
Acts 1:8–“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
D. God Needs Men And Women Today Who Are Full Of Faith And The Holy Spirit.
Romans 4:19-20 speaks of Abraham’s faith –“And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;”
Acts 4:31 speaks of the Jerusalem Church–“And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness”
VI. THE LORD NEEDS MEN AND WOMEN OF UNQUESTIONED LOYALTY.
(1 Chronicles 12:16-17)
A. We Must Not Allow The Conditions Of The World To Shake Our Faith.
Some are only loyal when it is convenient.
The Lord is needing folks who are loyal in season and out of season.
B. We Must Determine To Stand Fast For The Lord.
1 Corinthians 15:58–“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”
VII. THE LORD NEEDS MEN AND WOMEN POSSESSED WITH ONE SUPREME DESIRE. (1 Chronicles 12:23, 33, 38)
A. These Warriors Were Determined To Make David King And Willing To Fight The Necessary Battles To See That Others Recognized Him As King.
B. The Lord Needs Warriors Who Are Determined To Make Him King.
C. The Lord Needs Warriors Who Will Fight The Necessary Spiritual Battles To See That Others Recognize Him As King Also.
Conclusion:
Does the Lord Jesus Christ mean enough to us to make the statement of verse 18
"Thine are we, David, and on thy side"?
The Lord is looking for some men and women to fight the good fight of faith.
THE LORD NEEDS MEN AND WOMEN FROM EVERY TRIBE AND NATION.
He needs people just like you and me.
The question is, will we separate ourselves from that which is contrary to Him and separate ourselves unto Him?
THE LORD NEEDS MEN AND WOMEN WHO ARE SEPARATED UNTO HIM.
Will we do what needs to be done so that we are fully trained and equipped for spiritual warfare?
THE LORD NEEDS MEN AND WOMEN WHO ARE FULLY TRAINED AND EQUIPPED FOR WARFARE.
Will we do what is necessary to be filled and remain filled with the Spirit Of God?
THE LORD NEEDS MEN AND WOMEN OF SUPERNATURAL STRENGTH.
Does the Lord have our unquestioned loyalty?
THE LORD NEEDS MEN AND WOMEN OF UNQUESTIONED LOYALTY.
Are we committed to making the Lord Jesus Christ King of our lives?
THE LORD NEEDS MEN AND WOMEN POSSESSED WITH ONE SUPREME DESIRE.
Tonight, can you say?:
“Here am I Lord Jesus! I’m on Your side!”
“I have separated myself from that which is against you and separated myself only unto You!” “Lord Jesus, my loyalty is to You! I give You my all! All that I have and all that I am is Yours!” “Here I am reporting for duty in Your service! Use me as You see fit!”
That is what the Lord wants and needs from you and me. Are you willing to give it all to Him?
