HOW MUCH ARE THE SOULS OF MEN WORTH TO US?
MATTHEW 16:26
Introduction:
Matthew 16:26–“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”
What if a person could become the most powerful person in the World, but lost their own soul went to Hell. What would it profit them? (i.e. The Antichrist)
What if a person could become the richest person that the World has ever known, but lost their own soul and wound up being cast into the Lake of Fire. What would it profit them?
(i.e. Bill Gates)
What if a person could become the most beloved person in the World, but lost your soul and split their own soul to be hopelessly separated from God in flames for ever and ever. What would it profit them?
What if a person could become the finest athlete ever known to man, but lost their own soul and entered eternity without God in their life. What would it profit them?
(Marshall Faulk, Brett Favre, Greg Maddux, A-Rod, Barry Bonds, Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Pele’)
Anyone who understands the value of his own soul, then he will also understand that there is nothing worth giving in exchange for his soul.
What will a man give in exchange for his own soul?
It depends on how he views his soul. What we believe affects how we live.
If a person believes wrongly, they will live wrongly! Examples:
If a person believes that this life is all there is, then they will live for this life. (i.e. Jackie Gleason)
If a person believes that salvation is through a particular religion or church, then they will try their best to follow the teachings of that Church in order that they may go to heaven when they die.
If a person believes that he or she can earn eternal life, they will try to live the best they can and hope that they will be able to make it somehow.
If a person believes that Salvation is by grace through faith in what Jesus did at Calvary, then they will surrender their heart and life to Christ.
What will a man give in exchange for the souls of others?
I’m not talking about paying God off:
Some folks believe they can pay God off–that is, they believe that God is on the take!
Why would God be on the take when He already owns it all? The whole universe is His!
Roman Catholicism teaches their followers that they must do penance in order to offset their sin.
In other words, they believe and teach that people must pay for their sin.
If we could pay for our sin or earn salvation, why did Jesus have to die on the cross?
God is not looking for penance. He is looking for repentance!
There is no one anywhere who can buy anyone into heaven–Not themselves, their friends, their families, no one!
Psalm 49:6-8--“They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)
What I am saying is, what are you willing to give in order to see the souls of men, women, boys, and girls come to Christ? What is it worth to you?
I’m not talking about tithing–although giving is one way we can help get the Gospel out.
What is it worth to you to see others come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour?
To our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, it was worth his leaving his throne in heaven and:
1. His being slandered
2. His beard being snatched from His face
3. His back being scourged
4. His blood being shed
5. His body being broken
The sad reality is that the souls of men are not worth very much to the average professing Christian.
This is proved by how many people live their so called “Christian” lives.
I. HOW MUCH OF OUR TEARS IS A SOUL WORTH TO US?
Does it move you at all that well over 2/3 of the world we live in is headed for hell?
Psalms 126:5-6 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.
A. Tears are indications of compassion.
B. Tears are instruments of conversion.
Perhaps more lost people would be weeping at the altar if more saints of God wept over their lost souls!
HOW MUCH OF OUR TEARS IS A SOUL WORTH TO US?
II. HOW MUCH OF OUR TREASURE IS A SOUL WORTH TO US?
2 Corinthians 9:6-7 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
A. How much are you willing to spend in your personal efforts?
Gas to go witnessing.
B. How much are you willing to give to your local church?
1. In tithes and offerings
2. In special gifts.
C. How much are you willing to spend in missions giving?
Faith Promise Missions -- Are you giving?
More money is spent each year on dog food than on world wide missions.
If you hold a leadership position in a Church and don’t give to faith promise missions–shame on you!
III. HOW MUCH OF OUR TROUBLE IS A SOUL WORTH TO US? (Acts 8:26-30)
Many people are waiting for the lost to come to them rather than go to the lost.
Our problem is that we have gotten use to living in a world of convenience.
A. Are we willing to get up?
1. Leave our comfort zone (the recliner, the TV, recreation, etc.)
2. Leave our confidence zone.
Very few people I know feel equipped to do the work of God, but we can do it by his help!(Phil. 4:13; John 15:5),
The Lord promised to be with us always in the same breath that he gave us the Great Commission! (Mt. 28:19-20).
B. Are we willing to go where they are? - Acts 8:26,29
1. We need to go with the Holy Spirit's leading. (That implies His filling!)
2. We need to go with the speed required - Phillip RAN to catch up with the man in the chariot
C. Are we willing to give them the gospel?
It takes being inconvenienced sometimes to present the gospel. It certainly takes more for us to give a thorough presentation of the gospel than it does to invite someone to church next Sunday. That brings us to our last thought:
IV. HOW MUCH OF OUR TIME IS A SOUL WORTH TO US?
Acts 20:31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.
A. Time is a precious commodity.
1. Time is valuable. (Time is money.)
2. Time is something that can be invested, but it cannot be replaced.
3. Our time in reaching sinners is actually more important than our money.
B. Time is possessed by each of us in the same quantity.
We all have 24 hours in the day, and seven days in the week.
We do have the time to be a soul-winner. The question is will we choose to use our time to win souls or to do something else?
Again, the answer to that question depends on how much a soul is worth to us.
C. Time is to be redeemed.
1. Ephesians 5:16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
2. Time is redeemed when we get our priorities right.
3. We may have more time than we realize when we focus on what is really important.
4. We can redeem our time by asking God to help us redeem.
Conclusion
How much is a soul worth to you? How much of your tears? How much of your treasure?
How much of your trouble? How much of your time?
If we care for souls, we must:
Recognize the value of a soul.
Cherish a compassion for their well-being.
Recognize the danger that they are in.
Have a burden to reach them.
Recognize the provision God has made for us to share the gospel.
