ACTIONS THAT SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS
JOHN 10:36-38
Introduction
There is a saying that we’ve all probably heard or even said at one time or another.
“Talk is cheap.”
Someone said, “Talk is cheap because the supply has always exceeded the demand.”
I know that when it comes to politics that is definitely a true statement!
What do we mean when we say, “Talk is cheap”? It is an acknowledgment that for the most part we find great talkers to be little doers. It is easy for someone to talk big, but we usually want more than just to hear talk, we want to see that talk put into action.
We like folks to back up what they say. If someone in the business world gives us a guarantee, we don’t like being bamboozled by some fine print that we can’t read or understand.
We may say that “talk is cheap” or we may say that “actions speak louder than words.”
When someone applies for a job at a place of business, employers are not just looking for someone who can type up a good resume’. They are not wanting someone who just looks good on paper. What they are wanting is someone who has the ability, the skills, and the fortitude to get the job done! But many times employers are deceived by job applicants and wind up disappointed with the results when the actions of the employee begin to speak.
The actions speak louder than the words do!
That works the other way too. Many an applicant has been promised things that make a business or a particular job look great. Then when the person accepts the job, its something different than what was presented. Actions speak louder than words do!
How about with God and the Lord Jesus Christ? We have this book that is called
“The Word of God” or “The Bible.” How significant are God’s Words? Do these Words mean anything or are they a bunch of fluff?
I trust that you are on a quest for the truth! I know that I want to know the truth. Do you?
In that quest for the truth, we want words that are backed up with actions!
Here in our text we see that Jesus made some claims about who He was. Many others who span across the ages of time have made similar claims. However, Jesus backed up His claims with His actions. Look at verse 37 and 38 again. Jesus was saying I’ll let my actions do the talking because if you will listen to them, they will tell you who I am!
God has made some declarations in His Word and He always backs up His Words with actions!
God does not use words lightly! God means what He says!
I want us to see today that God’s Words do speak to us! But, more than that, I want us to see that God’s actions speaks louder than His Words! God backs up what He says!
I. WE HAVE GOD’S WORD ON LOVE.
A. God’s Word On Love. (John 3:16)
1 John 4:10–“Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us. . .”
1 John 4:8, 16–“God is love.”
When it comes to love, actions speak louder than words!
Ladies, which would you rather have, your man saying “I love you” or his actions showing that he loves you? How about the gentlemen?
Children, which would you rather have, your parents saying “I love you” or their actions proving that they love you?
Parents, which would you rather have, your children saying “I love you” or their actions proving that they love you?
B. God’s Actions Proving Love. (John 3:16; Romans 5:8; 1 John 3:16; 4:9-10)
The cross of Calvary proves the love of God for us!
WE HAVE GOD’S WORD ON LOVE.
II. WE HAVE JESUS’ WORD ON HIMSELF.
Jesus Christ–was He human or Divine or was He both?
If Jesus was only human, then He would be no different than you or me. If He was only human, then He could not be a Saviour because He would also be in need of a Saviour.
Romans 3:10, 23; 6:23; 5:12
If Jesus was only Divine, then He would not have human flesh and could not become our sacrifice or substitute for sin.
However, Jesus Christ was both human and Divine!
He was the virgin born Son of God so that He was sinless and He was born of a woman so that He could become the sacrifice for us!
A. Jesus Christ Claimed To Be The Son Of God. (John 10:30-33; 36-38)
Jesus Christ Was The Son Of God.
At His baptism in Matthew 3:17, God the Father said, “This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”
Look at what John the Baptist said of Jesus in John 1:32-34.
At His transfiguration in Matthew 17:5, God the Father again said, “This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”
Look at what Peter records of that event in 2 Peter 1:17-18.
But what spoke best of who Jesus is was His God-like acts that are recorded in the four Gospel accounts! (John 20:30-31)
a. He Healed Those Who Were Sick.
b. He Caused The Blind To See.
c. He Caused The Deaf To Hear.
d. He Caused The Lame To Walk.
e. He Fed Thousands By Multiplying A Little Boy’s Lunch.
f. He Raised The Dead.
B. Jesus Christ Claimed To Be Righteous. (John 8:29)
Jesus Christ Was Righteous!
What spoke best of His claim was His righteous life.
John 8:46–“Which of you convinceth me of sin?”
1 Peter 2:22–“Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:”
1 John 3:5–“And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.”
Hebrews 7:26–“. . . holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;”
At His baptism in Matthew 3:17, God the Father said, “This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”
At His transfiguration in Matthew 17:5, God the Father again said, “This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”
C. Jesus Christ Claimed He Would Come Out Of The Grave.
(John 2:19-22; 10:11, 15, 17-18)
Jesus Christ Arose From The Grave! (Matthew 28:1-8)
Acts 1:3–“. . .He showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:”
1 Corinthians 15:3-8
Romans 1:4–“And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:”
III. WE HAVE GOD’S WORD ON SALVATION.
A. God’s Word On Salvation Is That You Can’t Do It By Keeping God’s Law.
Romans 3:19-20--"Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”
James 2:10-11–“For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. 11For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.”
B. God’s Word On Salvation Is That Jesus Is The Only Way.
John 14:6–“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
John 3:18–“He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
John 3:36–“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
Acts 4:12–“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
C. God’s Word On Salvation Is That Now Is The Time To Get Salvation.
2 Corinthians 6:2–“. . .behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day
of salvation.)”
Hebrews 9:27–“. . .it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”
D. God’s Word On Salvation Is That He Will Save You, If You Come To Him.
John 6:37–“. . .him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”
Hebrews 7:25–“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”
E. God's Word On Salvation Is That It Is Eternal! (John 10:27-29)
1. He gives us eternal life!
2. He gives us everlasting life!
3. He said we would never perish!
4. He said He would never leave us nor forsake us! (Hebrews
13:5)
Conclusion
If you’ll come to Jesus in repentance and faith today, He’ll save you!
You have the Word of the God of the Universe who cannot lie!
What you need to do is to come to Jesus today and let Him prove His words to you!
Won’t you come today?!
Maybe you say that you are already a Christian. The name "Christian" means that you are "Christ like".
Are you "Christ like"? Remember, actions speak louder than words!
