LIVING A HOLY OR SANCTIFIED LIFE

PART 2–HOW DO BELIEVERS PARTICIPATE IN GOD’S SANCTIFYING WORK?

HEBREWS 13:12-13

Introduction

We saw in our first sermon regarding “LIVING A HOLY OR SANCTIFIED LIFE” that:

Sanctification is the setting apart of something for a particular purpose.

I.            SANCTIFICATION IS A WORK OF GOD!

The sanctification process begins with God. It begins with our salvation! The Holy Trinity is involved in sanctifying us!

               A.         It Is Said To Be A Work Of Jesus.

               B.         It Is Said To Be A Work Of The Holy Spirit.

               C.         It Is Said To Be A Work Of God The Father.

But we saw that Sanctification is not only a work of God, but . . .

II.           SANCTIFICATION IS A WORK OF GOD’S PEOPLE!

Leviticus 20:7–“Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God.”

1 Thessalonians 4:3-4–"3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: 4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;”

Tonight I want us to expand this thought that sanctification is a work of God’s people and see how in order to accomplish God’s purpose in sanctification, believers must actively participate in the spirit’s sanctifying work by doing some things!

What exactly is our part in sanctification? What are the things we simply MUST do to accomplish our part of the sanctification process?

I want to share with you twelve things from Scripture that I have found. (We will look at only 5 tonight.)

I.            WE MUST CEASE TO CONTINUE IN SIN AS A LIFESTYLE!

Romans 6:1-2–“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?”

Romans 6:12–“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.”

1 John 3:6-10 (This is speaking of continuing in sin as a lifestyle.)

WE MUST CEASE TO CONTINUE IN SIN AS A LIFESTYLE!

II            WE MUST CLEANSE OURSELVES FROM THE FILTHINESS OF THE FLESH!

2 Corinthians 7:11–“Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

(i.e. I believe this is talking about purifying ourselves from everything that contaminates our body, soul and spirit.)

               1 John 1:5-10

(Walking in the light means that we are in the Word of God and looking at our lives to see what we need to put off and what we need to put on!)

               Ephesians 4:17-32

Galatians 5:24–“And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.”

1 John 3.3–“And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”

III.         WE MUST KEEP OURSELVES FROM THE POLLUTION OF THIS WORLD!

James 1:27–“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Romans 6:13–“Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.”

Romans 6:19–“I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.”

Romans 8:13–“For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”

Romans 12:1-2–“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Romans 13:14–“But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.”

               Colossians 3:1-17

James 4:8–“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”

WE MUST CEASE TO CONTINUE IN SIN AS A LIFESTYLE!

WE MUST CLEANSE OURSELVES FROM THE FILTHINESS OF THE FLESH!

WE MUST KEEP OURSELVES FROM THE POLLUTION OF THIS WORLD!

IV.         WE MUST ABIDE IN CHRIST!

(i.e. I’m talking about maintaining intimate communion with Christ.)

John 15:4-5–“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

1 John 2:28–“And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.”

V.           WE MUST ABIDE IN FELLOWSHIP WITH OTHER BELIEVERS! (Ephesians 4:11-16)

In reality, this is part of abiding in Christ because the Church is His body!

Some people don’t think that the Church (the Assembly) is necessary, but it is! It is necessary to the sanctification process!

Romans 15:14–“And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.”

Colossians 3:16–“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

1 Thessalonians 5:11–“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”

Hebrews 10:24-25–“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”

Conclusion

God has done and will do His part in our sanctification. But, we must do our part!

We Must Cease To Continue In Sin As A Lifestyle!

We Must Cleanse Ourselves From The Filthiness Of The Flesh!

We Must Keep Ourselves From The Pollution Of This World!

We Must Abide In Christ! (Are you maintaining intimate communion with Him?)

We Must Abide In Fellowship With Other Believers!

How are you doing with your part? Remember the first step is Salvation!
